Chapter 40
A | B |
Feign a stoccata out of measure In measure, use a small disengage to get your true edge over the opposing blade and stoccata to the right shoulder | Do nothing |
Chapter 41
- If a stoccata is parried, do not disengage to an imbroccata; this is 2 tempi, whereas the riposte is 1 tempo. Instead you should jump back out of measure. This will cause your opponent to double advance to close with you at which point you can use Chapter 38.
The disengage to a low line is absolutely a natural maneuver so I see why he wants to call this out. With such long blades I can also see how that wouldn’t work. With a shorter blade, I could make the cut and seize the opposing guard or just get out of there, but without a secondary I wouldn’t feel safe.
- You may also remise with an obtuse angle stoccata and then return to guard
I believe there is an implied offline step with that remise, such as a transverse step to the inside.
Chapter 42
A | B |
Mandritto to the head | Parry with false edge and half mandritto to the face |
- You can also stoccata to the face as a riposte
- Do not contratempo stoccata to the face, the stoccata cannot withstand the mandritto.
Pallavicini gives an example of an Italian fencer attempting to contratempo stoccata a Spaniard’s mandritto and he got cut in the face and the Spandiard was fine.
Chapter 43
A | B |
Roverso to head with a transverse step | Contratempo stramazzone |
Chapter 44
A | B |
Guard 3rdRaise opponent’s blade with the false edge and roverso to the leg. | Guard 3rd |
Counter, from the blade raise:
A | B |
Withdraw right leg and half mandritto opponent’s right arm |
Counter from M. Galici, from the roverso:
A | B |
Parry with hand in 2nd and mandabolo to the face.-OR-Withdraw right foot to left heel and stoccata to the face |
I’m fairly sure this is the first place Pallavicini actually defines what a mandibolo is and it’s an off-hand description. The Mandibolo is a vertical cut.
Chapter 45
To seize the opponent’s weapon:
A | B |
Guard 3rd Lower sword and raise opponent’s Mixed step and seize the guard | Guard 3rd |
